Literacy

Reading
Our reading program has strong focus on independent reading from Foundation to Grade 6. Independent (indy) reading ranges from 5 minutes in Foundation rooms to 30+ minutes in Grade 5/6 classes. Students’ learning is supported through explicit instruction on the reading curriculum with an emphasis on comprehension strategies.

Writing
Our students are encouraged to write for a range of purposes. We balance explicit instruction with independent writing routines to give students a stronger understanding of the writing process. Students are involved in weekly Writing Conferences where their individual needs are met and their writing skills are improved.

Speaking and Listening
Our students are given regular opportunities to develop their Speaking and Listening skills, formally and informally. Examples of this are: class discussions, "share and learn", class talks and assembly presentations.

Instructional models
Our Tatura Primary School Instructional Models for Reading, Writing and Maths were developed to guide our teachers' instruction and to provide consistency across the school.
